About the artist
Carolyn McLeod-McCarthy
Guelph native Carolyn McLeod-McCarthy studied Graphic Design & Advertising at Conestoga College in Kitchener. She has worked in the field for 20 years in the media industry and recently took the leap into teaching at Conestoga College in Kitchener. She shares her love of graphic design, marketing, advertising and internet marketing technology with her students.
During the late 1990s, Carolyn also dabbled in fine arts, stained glass and various other crafts. It was in the early 2000s that Carolyn was at a craft show with another artist who made simple twisted beaded jewellery bracelets and to pass the time, the artist shared her craft. And that was the beginning of Carolyn's love of wire-crafted jewellery.
Over time, Carolyn has developed her pieces into a unique creations, making each base using a free-form technique then threading high-quality beads, hi-cut stones and freshwater pearls on fine wire, wrapping and threading until the artwork is complete.
With Carolyn's background in graphic design, her attention to detail, colour selection and balance of bead content shows in every piece she creates.
Jewellery artist Carolyn McLeod-McCarthy uses only the best quality materials for her work. Each piece is a one-of-a-kind, as they are all hand made.
The technique is a wire wrapping that has taken several years to develop. The shapes change and take on their own forms as it is a creative process and the wire often takes on a shape of its own. The threading of beads dictate how the piece will come together allowing each piece of jewellery to be truly unique.
The art wire Carolyn uses is a nickle-free copper base, coated with .925 sterling silver then coated in a fine enamel coating to keep silver from oxidating, leaving your jewellery bright and shiny.
The pearls Carolyn uses are freshwater pearls, hand selected by the artist for the roundest shape and even colour tones. The rounder and smoother the pearl, the higher the quality.
Carolyn also uses swarovski crystals, semi-precious stones from garnet to jade, aquamarine to citrine. Czech glass beads of high quality and known reputation for their hardness are also used throughout some of the pieces the artist creates.
The finishing chain, clasps and jump rings used to finish the pieces are a .925 sterling silver.
